Traveling to the Cloud Forest in North Central Costa Rica
First target desitnation is the tourism hub of Santa Elena. It is bustling village with all your needs, a place where you can get supplies, stay and eat.
If you’ll be driving. Be cautious on the steep road to Monteverde. It is full of potholes, and unpaved sodrive slowly. Just enjoy magnificent view.
You can take private transfers as an alternative. Private transfers, shared shuttles and taxi services available on the area. Going to Monteverde is a 4 to 5 hours trip from San Jose. If you will originate from Arenal, it will be a 3-hour land trip. Shorter 45-minute boat ride and about 1.5 hours ground travel. Take note you can take buses from San Jose and Puntarenas.

Average temperature is 80 degrees Fahrenheit at day time. 60 degrees at night. Carry close-toed hiking shoes, tactical pants and a jacket. Visiting in a rainy season. Carry a rain gear and use a waterproof backpack.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, redeemed as of the seven wonders of Costa Rica. It extends to over an area of 35,000 acres with altitude of 4,663 feet above sea level. The National Geographic Channel described it as “the jewel in the crown of cloud forests.”. It is idea to go early in the morning. It open at 7 A.M. A good time to hike some of the 8 miles of well-marked and beautifully maintained trails. Be early will avoid the crowds and to have a better chance of seeing birdlife and wildlife around the area. Experience bilingual guided walking tour available at the entrance. Keep your eyes open for a change to see resplendent quetzal. Did you know there are over 100 species of mammals. 400 species of birds, and 1,200 species of amphibians and reptiles.

The Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve is a smaller reserve which is only at 756 acres. Situated at a higher elevation of 5,250 feet. It has a community-run cloud forest reserve of 7.5 miles well-maintained trails. Offers a spectacular scenery. Less crowded.
